Built For The
Marine Nationale
The Grands Fonds was born from a 1959 French Navy request for a true professional dive instrument. Approved by the Marine Nationale in 1960, the watch was engineered around the practical problems divers faced underwater, not around conventional watch design.
Its defining feature was the 6 o’clock crown, created to protect the crown and help ensure it was secured before use. Paired with a monobloc case, bold Magnum hands, antimagnetic steel, and expandable bracelet links, the Grands Fonds became one of the most distinctive military dive watches of its era.
Ethan's Note:
ZRC is the type of heritage brand I always find interesting. The watches still feel closely connected to the vintage Grands Fonds, especially with the 6 o’clock crown and unmistakable case shape, but the brand is not just making simple reissues. Modern systems like CPS and the ECS bezel-cleaning system give the watches real functional purpose, while the sizing is excellent for the amount of water resistance offered. They are quirky, but the quirkiness comes from ZRC solving problems in its own way, not from trying to be different for the sake of being different.
