The Grand Seiko 44GS was introduced in 1967 and became one of the defining examples of Taro Tanaka’s “Grammar of Design,” the set of design principles that helped establish Grand Seiko’s modern visual identity. Its case is characterized by broad polished surfaces, sharp transitions and inward-sloping facets designed to emphasize light and shadow.
This example is the SBGJ235, a limited-edition model sold exclusively through Grand Seiko boutiques. It features a blue Mt. Iwate-pattern dial, inspired by the ridgelines of Mount Iwate visible from the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. Inside is the Grand Seiko caliber 9S86, a 37-jewel Hi-Beat automatic GMT movement operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour. The GMT function uses an independently adjustable local hour hand, allowing the local time to be changed without stopping the movement.
